Encore Boston Harbor Building New Riverfront Playground and Riverwalk at Rivergreen in Everett

3.5-Acre Waterfront Playground Will Feature Sports Amenities, Splash Pad, Picnic Areas and Extensive Riverwalk

EVERETT, MA (September 24, 2018) – Encore Boston Harbor broke ground on a new playground and pedestrian path that will link to the Northern Strand Community Trail, a nine-mile stretch connecting community waterfronts from Everett to Lynn. The Rivergreen Playground and Riverwalk are 100 percent funded by Encore Boston Harbor and will revitalize a formerly polluted industrial parcel that blocked public access to the Malden River.

“Just like Encore Boston Harbor, the Rivergreen Playground and Riverwalk will bring new life to a previously inaccessible waterfront and create a natural attraction for everyone in Everett and beyond to enjoy,” said Robert DeSalvio, President of Encore Boston Harbor. “Along with providing a magnificent park that will be used by children of all ages, the Riverwalk will complete a missing link to waterfront trails that connect the North Shore—one of which will lead directly to our resort’s scenic Harborwalk that overlooks the Mystic River.”

Situated along the Malden River, the Rivergreen Playground will be equipped with a new playing field for soccer, football, field hockey and lacrosse; two basketball courts; a street hockey rink; a children’s playground and splash area; and multiple picnic areas.

Rivergreen Playground and Riverwalk were critical pieces of the Malden River Greenway Plan, created by the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA), longstanding partners of Encore Boston Harbor’s commitment to the lower Mystic watershed. The plan’s vision to transform the river and create a world-class park system running through the cities of Everett, Malden and Medford won the Congress for the New Urbanism - New England (CNU-NE) 2018 Green Infrastructure Award.

“The waterfront park along the Malden River Greenway will become a tremendous asset for everyone to enjoy for years to come,” said Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria. “Opening our city to the waterfront will improve the quality of life for our existing residents and enhance our appeal to new residents, businesses and the development community.”
